Birding Central Argentina

Endemic birds of Cordoba province

4 days / 3 nights
One of Argentina's endemic bird areas home of Cordoba Cinclodes, Olrog's Cinclodes, Salinas Monjita and several specialities.
Expect: 200-250 species, good accommodation, easy to moderate terrain, moderate to high elevation, mild to hot climate.
Trip report and wildlife checklist available.
Can be combined with tour "Birding Northwest Argentina".
Departures anytime from January to December.

In the geographic centre of the country rise the Cordoba Hills, a granite massif of 2800 m on its highest point. Separated from the Andes by some 320 Km the region has acted as a true island for speciation and is home to several endemic birds, both at the higher elevations and in the adjacent lowlands and saltflats. Such is the case of the Cordoba Cinclodes and Salinas Monjita, two of the most sought-after birds in Argentina. Several subspecies occur only here, such as Cordoba/Puna Canastero and Olrog's Cinclodes, sometimes considered a full species.

Dense stands of Chaco vegetation support an amazingly rich assortment of birds which includes specialties such as Brushland Tinamou, Spot-winged Falconet, Black-bodied Woodpecker, Chaco Owl, Scimitar-billed Woodcreeper and Black-and-chestnut Warbling-Finch. Here too Andean Condors and Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle patrol the skies; and small jewels like the Red-tailed Comet and the Olive-crowned Crescent-chest are but a few examples of what can be found. This tour is perfect to take as an extension from another tour, or to “clean up” your Argentine endemics list. The general infrastructure of the area offers nice accommodation, good restaurants and peaceful birding spots.
