The subtropical forests of Misiones represent the largest tract of Interior Atlantic forest, the habitat with the highest biodiversity of Argentina. This itinerary will take us to three key birding areas of the province: The surroundings of Iguazú and its spectacular falls, the near-pristine forests of Urugua-í Provincial Park, and the Araucaria (monkey-puzzle) forests of the planalto near San Pedro.The first afternoon we will bird around the hotel grounds. Here we will find the commoner species including several tanagers and tyrant flycatchers that usually wander in mixed-flocks.

The following two days will be devoted to the National Park. Here we will see the Iguazú falls from all angles as we trek the upper and the lower boardwalks for spectacular views. Also, main roads and forest trails will give access to fine birding spots. Here we will search for some of the more colourful species, including tanagers, trogons, toucans and parrots. This all will be topped by a visit to the hummingbird feeders in a garden at Puerto Iguazú, where up to 10 species may gather. Among the noteworthy mammals of the region one can mention Coati, Brown Capuchin Monkey, Agouti, Brocket Deer, and even Tayra and several cats. The next stop will be Urugua-í Provincial Park. Here the near primary forests have another array of species. Dusky-tailed Antbird, Mouse-coloured Tapaculo, Lesser Woodcreeper, Rusty-breasted Nunlet, several raptors and the endangered Black-fronted Piping-guan, among others. From Urugua-í we will travel to the not too distant town of San Pedro. The forest here is noticeably different to that of the previous locations. And so are the birds. Specialities that we will search around San Pedro include Vinaceous-breasted Amazon, Araucaria Tit-spinetail and Canebrake Groundcreeper. On our last day we will be transferred back to Iguazú and the airport to board our flight.
